Canada has produced some of America’s most treasured musicians, from Alanis Morisette to Justin Bieber. Avril Lavigne, pop-punk princess of the early 2000’s, is another one of these magical northerners sent to occupy stages and sk8er boi hearts around the world.
Born in Ontario, Avril broke into the music industry in 2002 at age 17 with her debut album, Let Go. Since, she’s sold more than 40 million albums and 50 million singles worldwide. It was also in 2002 that she performed her single “Complicated” on the “All That” stage!
Decked out in a striped polo shirt with a striped tie and camo pants, this performance is Avril at her Avril-est. The early 2000’s had a lot of signature styles, and this — what we like to think of as the “Hot Topic” look — was absolutely iconic.
Complicated is one of those songs that really sticks with you for no apparent reason. Maybe it’s the universal tale of a friend or love interest that’s “trying to be cool” but “looking like a fool.” Facebook even branded “complicated” as an official relationship status– because of this song? Unlikely, but fun to pretend.
So what’s up with Avril these days, anyway? Following “Let Go” she released her second studio album, “Under My Skin”, in 2004. Her third album, “The Best Damn Thing”, was released in 2007, followed by her fourth, “Goodbye Lullaby”. Avril’s also a kick-butt entrepreneur, and released her own clothing and perfume lines. Avril married and divorced Sum 41’s lead singer Deryck Whibley before tying the knot with “Nickelback” frontman Chad Kroeger in 2013.
To some of us, Avril may always be 17 and on the “All That” stage, but it’s clear that her wheels haven’t stopped turning, and we have more to expect from her in the future. That may be tough to wrap your head around, but what can we say? Life is complicated.
