Dozens of 90s and 00s musical favorites graced the stage on “All That” over the course its 8 season run. Few are more iconic than the Spice Girls, the British girl group that swept the world up in a wave of pop positivity, catchy melodies and girl power.
Spice girls Baby, Ginger, Sporty, Scary and Posh formed in 1994 and released their smash single “Wannabe” in 1996, which topped the charts in 37 countries. After selling 80 million records worldwide, they became, and remain, the best-selling girl group of all time, one of the best selling pop groups, and the biggest British musical phenomenon since the Beatles.
Their appearance on “All That” was exciting to say the least. And unlike other “All That” musical performances, this one started with a skit! Kel Mitchell brings in all five Spice Girls in for show and tell, where a young Amanda Bynes asks them, “what is the second law of thermodynamics?”
Surprisingly enough, Ginger Spice had the answer. “Energy cannot be created or destroyed,” she says confidently, “Just like the Spice Girls.” Then, the five share their favorite spices, ranging from cinnamon to paprika, and let Keenan know that he can be a Spice Boy if he wants to.
Their performance of “Spice Up Your Life” is peak Spice Girls in fashion and song. Each girl embodies their persona, performing a choreographed dance under the “All That” stage’s neon lights. The message of “Spice up Your Life” is one that never gets old: All you need is positivity! Sometimes, we all need a reminder to spice up our life.
For all of you nostalgic viewers, worry not — the Spice Girls may be icons of the 90s, but they’re far from gone. In fact, on July 8, 2016, it was announced that they will be officially reuniting to celebrate 20 years of spiciness. For now, it’s just a trio, and they’ll call themselves GEM for Geri (Ginger), Emma (Baby), and Mel B (Scary). We can’t help but hope Sporty and Posh come around by the time they perform!
